UPDATED, August 11: The full trailer for Amazon MGM’s Verity film adaptation is here.

Based on Colleen Hoover‘s best-selling psychological thriller novel, the film stars Anne Hathaway as the titular author Verity Crawford, who has remained nonverbal and unable to walk since a devastating accident left her in that state.

Josh Hartnett’s Jeremy Crawford recruits Dakota Johnson‘s Lowen Ashleigh to finish the final novel in Verity’s book series, but she has questions, like “Why can’t your wife finish her book series?”

The whine of her wheelchair mechanism strikes a creepy cord as a limp, unresponsive Anne Hathaway. Jeremy tells Lowen that “doctors don’t think she’ll ever walk or talk again.” This is important information for later. According to Jeremy, Verity called Lowen a “brilliant, undiscovered voice” and “the only writer who can finish this last novel.”

Lowen desperately needs the money, but she doesn’t realize what she’s walking into by taking the deal, as soon she gets romantically involved with Jeremy, but she has glimpses of Verity looking at her from outside the window of their reclusive mansion or standing in the doorway when Lowen’s kissing Jeremy.

“Her fans know her voice,” Lowen tells Jeremy. “The would know it’s not her.”

Then, we get to hear Hathaway’s Verity narrate what is on a flashdrive engraved with the initials V.C., a chilling note to Lowen under the Word Doc with the file name “Autobiography.”

“This is my confession, my autobiography,” Hathaway’s voice says. “A writer’s words should be honest and bloody and a little bit terrifying.”

Flashes of Verity in a glamorous red dress with lipstick to match intercut with a version of her wearing less makeup in a darker setting as these words settle into Lowen’s mind.

“I was his drug, and he was mine,” Hathaway continues in reference to Jeremy. “This is your final warning, only darkness ahead.”

Michael Showalter directs from a screenplay by Nick Antosca. Antosca and Showalter also produce alongside Alex Hedlund, p.g.a., Stacey Sher, p.g.a., Jordana Mollick, p.g.a., Hathaway and author Hoover. Executive producers include Johnson, Lauren Levine and Kerry Orent.

PREVIOUS, April 27: Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first teaser for Verity, its adaptation of the bestselling psychological thriller by It Ends with Us author Colleen Hoover.

The film, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson and slated to hit theaters October 2, follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer who is hired to complete a successful book series after its author, Verity Crawford (Hathaway), is incapacitated. Once inside the Crawford home, Lowen becomes entangled with Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) and uncovers an unfinished manuscript that may reveal disturbing truths about the author.

While Amazon MGM recently unveiled a trailer for the film at CinemaCon, as we reported, the teaser unveiled today is different.

It finds Lowen walking into the darkness of Verity’s home, with the author lying ill, in bed. The camera pans over to Jeremy, who promptly begins making out with Lowen with his wife in the room — and eventually, when Lowen pulls away, we see that it’s somehow Verity herself that she’s getting intimate with.

“Even with my generous warning, you’re going to continue to ingest my words,” Verity tells Lowen in the trailer. “But know one thing: there is no light where we’re going. Darkness ahead.”

Directed by Michael Showalter, a frequent hire of Amazon MGM’s who reteamed with Hathaway on the heels of their rom-com The Idea of You, Verity also stars Ismael Cruz Córdova and Brady Wagner.

The film is one of a number of book-to-film adaptations based on the work of BookTok phenomenon Hoover, on the heels of Sony’s It Ends with Us, which broke out as an outsized commercial success at a worldwide gross exceeding $351 million, even as a legal battle between the film’s key creatives Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni threatened to overshadow that success. Paramount followed that film up quickly with Regretting You, a Hoover adaptation starring Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco and Mason Thames, which grossed over $90 million. After that came Universal’s Reminders of Him, starring Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, which did more than $84M in theaters earlier this year.
