A young male great white shark was detected swimming off the coast of Canada on Sunday as he continued his journey toward his northern summer foraging grounds.

Cross, a juvenile great white shark, was tracked moving north through the Gulf of St. Lawrence. His latest ping placed him about 5.5 miles off the coast of Quebec in the Honguedo Strait, between the Gaspé Peninsula and Anticosti Island.
According to OCEARCH, a global nonprofit that studies sharks around the world, Cross traveled about 114 miles in just three days, making him the northernmost shark actively pinging on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker.
Experts say this is a typical part of the species’ seasonal migration, as great white sharks move north to productive feeding grounds during the summer and fall.
As temperatures begin to cool in the fall, great white sharks migrate south in search of warmer waters and abundant food sources for the winter. They typically travel toward the southeastern U.S. and the Caribbean.

Cross was tagged off the coast of Nova Scotia in October 2025 during OCEARCH’s ongoing research to better understand how great white sharks use Atlantic Canada’s coastal waters.
At the time of tagging, Cross measured 9 feet, 1 inch long.
OCEARCH said Cross is providing valuable data that helps researchers better understand the vital ecosystems that support both people and marine predators across Atlantic Canada.
