‘X-Men’ Reboot Director Jake Schreier Says ‘Beef’ Creator & ‘The Bear’ Showrunner Are Writing Script For Marvel Film

Jake Schreier is working on the X-Men film reboot and has revealed that Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear showrunner Joanna Calo are working on a script for the Marvel movie.

In a new interview, the Thunderbolts* director said that the X-Men movie was still in the “developing” stage, telling Collider, Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo “have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again.”

Schreier has worked with Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo on Beef, and they both wrote for Thunderbolts*. The X-Men reboot would reunite the trio in another Marvel film, which is expected to be released sometime after Avengers: Secret Wars.

The filmmaker called Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo “two of the most interesting shows on television right now,” adding, “When you go back and read X-Men [comics], there’s ideology but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality. Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that’s what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be.”

Avengers: Doomsday will reunite the X-Men superheroes for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All the characters now live under the Disney umbrella following Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier / Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and James Marsden (Cyclops).

In a 2025 interview, Schreier discussed what he learned on Thunderbolts* that he would apply to making the X-Men film.

“The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes, and how, even though it’s more shooting days than I’ve ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff,” he told Empire. “By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.’”
