X, formerly known as Twitter, has crashed this afternoon in an outage affecting thousands of users around the world.

According to Down Detector, the Elon Musk-owned social media site began experiencing disruption shortly after 14:30 BST.

Since then, reports of issues have continued to roll in, with 11,800 users experiencing an issue with the platform.

Of those affected, 50 per cent said they were having issues with the app, 29 per cent with their feed or timeline.

Meanwhile, the remaining 14 per cent said that they were having problems with the website.

Hundreds of disgruntled users have flocked to rival platforms Threads and Bluesky to complain about this afternoon’s outage.

One confused commenter wrote on Threads: ‘Anybody else’s Twitter X down?’

While another joked: ‘Twitter is error and everyone goes to Threads immediately to make sure if X is currently down or not.’

X, formerly known as Twitter, has crashed this afternoon in an outage affecting thousands of users around the world.

According to Down Detector, the outages are occurring for X users all over the world.

On the forum, one user complained that X was ‘not loading, not able to post’ while another added ‘posting/Messaging up and down again’.

However, the issues do not appear to have affected all users, as the Daily Mail was able to load the X main feed on the mobile app and browser page.

X has yet to make a statement to acknowledge the issue and has not provided any explanation for the disruption.

However, the disruption could be related to a major Cloudflare outage was is currently affecting dozens of sites.

The company, which provides web security, speed, and routing services for millions of sites, connects users to websites and applications through its vast global network, meaning when Cloudflare goes down, a huge portion of the internet fails with it.

These issues began at 14:35 BST, almost exactly the moment that X users began experiencing problems.

At that time, the company announced it was investigating increased error rates and latency in multiple services.

Issues began at 8.35am ET on Monday, affecting a range of services including X, Zoom, Google and Microsoft

Cloudflare acknowledged the disruption, describing it as an internal service degradation that may intermittently impact some services, and confirmed that a fix was underway.

The company said in a statement: ‘We are investigating a fiber cut in Eastern North America.

‘Customers connecting through North America or accessing services in Europe may see increased latencies and timeouts as Cloudflare engineers look to mitigate.’

In an updated statement, posted at 16:12 BST, cloudflare added: ‘We are continuing our traffic engineering work to mitigate the impact.’

On the Meta-owned social media platform Threads, many confused users scrambled to figure out what was happening.

One commenter asked: ‘Is X still down?’

‘Is Twitter down? Posts aren’t loading,’ chimed in another.

However, on Bluesky, social media users rushed to mock the Musk-owned rival site.

One user wrote: ‘Woo hoo!! Thank goodness. Madness can be put on hold for a while.’

‘Every second it’s down is a second fewer people are having their minds poisoned,’ added another.

As another bitterly wrote: ‘Let it stay down permanently.’

This comes after a major outage affected the Meta-owned social media sites Instagram and Facebook, leaving thousands of users unable to access services.

This led to users logging 21,860 reports of outages in just 30 minutes on Down Detector.

The issue even appears to extend to Facebook Messenger, with 8,694 reports of issues.
