A California mother is facing charges after authorities say she shattered a school bus door window, climbed inside, and confronted the driver while frustrated parents demanded their children be released.
The chaotic scene unfolded Aug. 24, along Highway 49 in Calaveras County, according to KCRA 3.
The incident reportedly began when a student tried to climb out of a window before the bus stopped. The driver then ordered the students to stay seated and roll up the windows.
“That’s when the bus driver was like, ‘Sit down, roll up the windows,’” one student told KCRA 3.
The driver reportedly told the children they would have to remain on the bus until law enforcement arrived.
The decision frustrated parents who arrived at the scene after their children called them from the bus.
Nicole Wellington said her son was frightened, prompting her to drive to the bus and demand that he be released.
“I went right to the door, and I was like, ‘Dude, open the door. Let me have my kid.’ And he’s like, ‘I’m not doing that,’” Wellington said.
Wellington eventually told her son to climb through a bus window to get out.
“If he would have handled that situation and gave the parents their kids that were there, I think it probably would have went a little bit differently than it did,” Wellington said.
The situation escalated when another parent struck the bus door, shattering the glass.
The woman then climbed headfirst through the broken window and onto the bus, confronting the driver in front of the students.
Video of the incident shows the woman crawling through the frame before the scene degenerated into chaos.
As the confrontation unfolded, other students began using the bus windows as makeshift exits.
One 12-year-old student said the children initially screamed because they were excited to finally get off the bus.
“Everybody was screaming and stuff because they were excited to get off the bus,” the student told KCRA 3.
But not every parent believed removing the children from the bus was the right decision.
Rebecca Glover said she told her children to remain on the bus when she arrived at the scene.
“There was not just one child they had to think of,” Glover said. “They had to think of every single child on that bus at that time.”
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office said the parent who climbed through the broken glass was taken into custody and charged with vandalism.
Her identity has not been released. No one was hurt in the incident.
The Calaveras Unified School District told KCRA 3 it is also reviewing video of the incident and will take appropriate action against the students involved.
District officials, however, defended the driver’s actions.
“Regarding the driver, after reviewing the video footage, the District believes the driver acted appropriately under extremely challenging circumstances,” Superintendent Kassandra Meeks told CBS News. “His focus remained on student safety, maintaining order, and attempting to de-escalate the situation.”
Authorities and school officials have not publicly released additional details about what led to the confrontation or the circumstances surrounding the student’s initial attempt to leave the bus.
