Waters off the coast of North Carolina were teeming with sharks on Saturday, after drone video captured what appears to be hundreds of sharks in shallow waters near the beach.

THE TAKEAWAY

  • Hundreds of sharks were seen near a North Carolina beach.
  • This behavior isn’t unusual, especially during migration season.
  • The type of shark isn’t known.

NORTH CAROLINA – A huge school of sharks was seen on drone video swimming in shallow waters off a barrier island on North Carolina‘s coast.

Beneath the teal-colored waters off Masonboro Island, what looked to be hundreds of sharks were seen swimming near the beaches, with a loan stingray accompanying them.

Sharks often swim in large groups like this during seasonal migration, which makes a sight like this not unusual.

During migration, sharks will travel to cooler or warmer waters, depending on the season, in search of fresh food sources.

In the summer, species like great white sharks, will move up into the waters off the northeastern U.S. or Atlantic Canada.

It’s unclear what type of shark is featured in the video.

The video shows the drone panning out from the beach into the waters.

One of the first angles shows a group of anywhere from 30 to 50 sharks swimming in the more shallow waters.

Another angle of the camera shows hundreds more sharks in the water, some breaking the surface to catch prey.

The drone then followed a large stingray, swimming on the edge of the shark group, its distinct body just below the surface.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Adam Pflum, who recorded the video, told Storyful News he was “wowed” at the sight of so many sharks.

More than a dozen shark species call the Atlantic home off the coast of North Carolina.
