Another incident in Washington, D.C., has caught the attention of President Donald Trump.
The 80-year-old billionaire has made beautifying the nation’s capital one of the defining priorities of his second term, pouring millions of taxpayer dollars into a series of highly publicized projects aimed at reshaping the city.
Since returning to the White House in 2025, Trump has pushed a string of ambitious overhauls across Washington, D.C.—with some projects moving forward smoothly and others drawing controversy, setbacks and public scrutiny.
In particular, Trump’s fixation on alleged Washington vandalism made headlines. That obsession with damage to public property continued this week.
Reports began circulating on Aug. 14 that the World War II Memorial on the National Mall had been tagged with red and green graffiti.
The words “Clean hands Dirty $” were painted on a fountain at the 7.4-acre site. Additionally, the water was filled with bubble soap.
“Our beautiful World War II Memorial was just hit by spray-painting vandals,” Trump wrote on social media on Friday at 8:52 am ET.
He continued, “THERE CAN BE NO GREATER INSULT TO THOSE AMERICAN HEROES WHO DIED IN WORLD WAR II.”
Trump’s early-morning, all-caps rant about the monument dedicated to World War II veterans drew both supportive and dismissive reactions on social media.
“Disgusting. I don’t care which side of the aisle anyone is on, dishonoring our veterans is despicable,” expressed an outraged X user. “I hope the culprits are caught and given the harshest possible punishment allowed under the law.”
In contrast, Trump’s critics did not hold back in slamming him. Particularly because he was accused of making disparaging comments about American troops and veterans in the past.
The fact that he avoided Vietnam War service by receiving a medical draft exemption for bone spurs remains a cloud over his head, too.
One tweet in response to Trump’s Truth Social remarks read, “Having a #DraftDodger as the Commander-In-Chief is insult enough.”
“DJT himself is the greatest insult to these heroes,” someone else tweeted. Similarly, one person declared, “Trump’s presidency is a greater insult to those American Heroes who died in WWII.”
Trump recently having The Arts of War and The Arts of Peace statues in DC covered with 23.75-karat gold leaf fueled more backlash directed.
“Didn’t Trump just paint a statue ‘gold’? The actual vandal is in the White House,” suggested another person on X.
A like-minded commenter posted, “He will fix it by covering it in gold leaf and arresting someone who walks by the memorial 10 days from now.”
Despite detractors calling him out, Trump wants the world to know he is determined to apprehend the culprits who defaced the WWII Memorial.
“First the Reflecting Pool, now this. We are on their trail! Where do these animals come from???” an irate Trump asked on his self-owned platform.
Part of Trump’s beautification initiative included renovating the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The popular tourist attraction is also located on the National Mall.
However, the to make over the Reflecting Pool did not go as expected. The newly applied “America flag blue” coating began peeling and began rising to the top of the water.
The president also accused vandals of ruining the restoration effort. He pushed for United States Attorney for DC, Jeanine Pirro, to charge several suspects with federal crimes.
Once the cases reached the courtroom, prosecutors had to acknowledge that there was not sufficient evidence against the alleged perpetrators. The charges were dropped.
Even Trump eventually conceded that “some contractor error” caused damage to the Reflecting Pool after his Justice Department lost the legal fight.
Since the Department of the Interior approved no-bid contracts to companies closely aligned with Trump, the MAGA leader was blamed for the disastrous outcome.
While the Reflecting Pool facelift was a failure, the Interior Department backed up Trump’s tenacity to capture any individuals responsible for spray painting the WWII Memorial.
“The vandalism that occurred is an utter disgrace and will not be tolerated,” read a statement from the Interior Department, per NBC News.
It resumed, “Our U.S. Park Police are on the scene and the investigation is ongoing. The public should know we will find the person responsible for this disgusting act.”
Around 10 a.m. ET, Pirro announced a suspect was in custody. She plans to file two felony charges against a woman named Melissa L. Farris.
As that criminal case plays out, the president’s drive to remake the District of Columbia in his image will likely carry on.
Trump already had his sights on transforming other Washington sites such as the White House, the Kennedy Center, Lafayette Park, and the East Potomac Golf Links.
