Tourist dies after rock arch in Malta collapses onto jetski in freak accident

COMINO, Malta– A man died, and a woman was injured when a natural arch rockway collapsed onto a jetski where the pair was sitting in Malta.

According to Times of Malta, the incident happened on Saturday evening, shortly after an American tourist jumped off the rockway and into the water below.

A man and woman from China were driving the jetski beneath the arch when the rock collapsed, Times of Malta said.

Times of Malta said the 26-year-old man was trapped beneath the fallen rocks underwater. His body was recovered on Sunday evening, roughly 24 hours after the incident happened.

According to the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), the woman was taken to a nearby hospital for her injuries.

The person who jumped off the rock was rescued by a passing boat, but didn’t need to be hospitalized.

Times of Malta said divers from the Civil Protection Department and the Armed Forces of Malta began searching for the man’s body on Saturday evening.

The man’s body was located late Saturday, but couldn’t be recovered until Sunday night, AFM and Times of Malta reported.
