Stephen King Calls Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Miniseries “Brilliant”

Stephen King has weighed in on Mike Flanagan‘s adaptation of Carrie, and he has a positive review.

The supernatural horror miniseries premieres on October 7 on Prime Video with Summer H. Howell in the title role. Ahead of its release, the author of the 1974 novel the series is based on shared his take on the remake.

“Mike Flanagan’s version of CARRIE is brilliant,” King wrote on Threads. “What it has to say about social media is shocking and true.”

Carrie follows misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Howell) after having spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). Following her father’s unexpected death, Carrie enters the public high school ecosystem and is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community.

Carrie also faces the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.

King’s son, Joe Hill, also took to social media to share the series trailer and give a positive review.

“I was watching this trailer for Carrie on Instagram and thinking how good it looks and suddenly found myself fighting back tears,” Hill posted on Threads. “Never had that happen before, watching a preview. Maybe I’m getting a bit soggy in my fifties, I don’t know. Looks so good tho—Mike Flanagan sure can make em.”

Carrie was first adapted into a film in 1976, with Brian De Palma directing a screenplay written by Lawrence D. Cohen and Sissy Spacek as Carrie. A direct sequel, directed by Katt Shea, The Rage: Carrie 2 was released in 1999, with Emily Bergl playing Rachel Lang, Carrie’s younger half-sister.

In 2002, a television film directed by David Carson and based on a screenplay by Bryan Fuller debuted on NBC, with Angela Bettis as Carrie.

Before the new miniseries on Prime Video, Kimberly Peirce directed a 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz.

Prime Video’s Carrie also stars Siena Agudong (Sue Snell), Alison Thornton (Chris Hargensen), Joel Oulette (Tommy Ross), Josie Totah (Tina), Arthur Conti (Billy), Thalia Dudek (Emaline), Amber Midthunder (Miss Desjardin), and Matthew Lillard (Principal Grayle).
