Actress Sandra Bullock is opening up about the fear that comes with raising two Black children as a white mother.

The “Blindside” actress says she’s often deeply concerned about what could happen when her children leave the protection of their home.

Bullock adopted Louis in 2010 and later adopted Laila through the foster care system in 2015.

During a recent appearance on the “Today” show with Hoda Kotb while promoting “Practical Magic 2,” Bullock discussed raising her teenage children.

She said one of her biggest worries is that strangers will not recognize the relationship between her and her children. Instead, only view them as Black children moving through the world without her.

The Oscar winner described herself as “uber paranoid” when her children leave home, particularly as they become older and more independent.

“We’re different….” Bullock said about her children before pointing to her pale skin and adding, “This.”

“I’m uber paranoid, and they will tell you,” she explained. “They’re like, ‘Mom, it’s gonna be fine.’ I’m like, ‘It’s not fine. It’s not fine outside.’ The energy that is floating around our country and our world again.”

As Louis and Laila have grown, their mother has had to accept that her kids do not physically resemble her.

“The color of their skin… they’re my babies, they’re my life, but no one knows that when they leave my house,” Bullock shared. “So that is always in the forefront of my mind. I’m now learning to trust them. Where they are now is extraordinary.”

Her comments echo concerns she previously shared about raising Black children and preparing them for experiences she cannot prevent.

During a 2021 appearance on “Red Table Talk,” Bullock recalled beginning conversations about race and racial profiling with Louis when he was young.

“At the age of 6, he popped on a hoodie and I was like, ‘We’re going to have a conversation,’” she said at the time.

Bullock said she wanted her son to understand early that being Black could affect how other people perceive and treat him. As Louis and Laila have gotten older, those conversations have become increasingly important as she prepares to give them more freedom.

For Bullock, that transition has not been easy.

“I panic at everything. I think they’re gonna die all the time,” she said in 2021. “When I get up at night, I walk by their rooms to make sure they’re breathing.”

The “Crash” star also acknowledged the complicated position she occupies as a white mother raising Black children.

Bullock’s celebrity status may offer protection or recognition, but she knows that advantage may disappear when her children are alone.

“As a white parent who loves her children more than life itself. I’m scared of everything,” Bullock said. “I know I’m laying all kinds of existential anxiety on them. And I have to think about what they’re gonna experience leaving the home. They’re gonna have my fear, but how can I make sure that my anxiety is accurate, protective?”

Bullock fears the day her son becomes viewed as a Black man instead of the child she knows at home.

“With Lou being a young Black man, at one point, sweet, funny Lou is gonna be a young man and the minute he leaves my home, I can’t follow him everywhere, though I will try,” Bullock said. “I’m joking, but I’m not.”

She added, “I don’t know what I will do, but I pray, I pray, I pray that I’ve done a good enough job, scared them sufficiently.”

That anxiety has shaped how Bullock approaches parenting. It has influenced what her children are allowed to see and how openly she discusses difficult subjects with them.

She recalled one moment when Louis put on a hoodie, prompting another conversation about how he might be perceived.

“I’ve been schooling Lou since he was 6 years old. He popped that hoodie on his head and I said, ‘Ah… let me just explain,’” she said.

Rather than shielding him completely from difficult realities, Bullock said she allowed him to see what was happening in the world and process it for himself.

“I let him see everything. I let him see everything on television. I let him process it,” she said. “He knows how the world works. He knows how cruel it is. He knows how unfair it is, and now Laila knows it.”

Now, as both children grow older, Bullock is confronting a reality that many parents eventually face: She cannot always be there to protect them.

For the actress, however, that separation carries another layer of fear. She knows that when her children walk out the door, the world may not see them as the children she knows and loves.

And that is a reality she says remains at the forefront of her mind.
