Away from the cameras, however, her life appeared far more secure. She was in a decade-long romance with footballer Kean Bryan and had two sons, Mexx, six, and Monroe, four, and a wedding to plan.
So when it emerged this week that the actress had called off her four-year engagement, fans were left shocked.
But I can reveal that the 34-year-old actress had been threatening to leave the former West Bromwich Albion defender, 29, for several months, with sources close to the couple telling the Daily Mail their relationship had turned ‘toxic’ following the premature end of Kean’s football career.
Brooke is said to have become increasingly infuriated by Kean’s relentless partying, which ramped up after he prematurely retired from football due to a crippling ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury.
Sources close to the couple say the atmosphere between them had become ‘extremely difficult’, with Brooke sharing her discontent with fellow Manchester-based soap stars.
‘She has been pretty vocal about this among her friends and she couldn’t go through with getting married the way things are at home,’ one source tells me.
‘Kean has struggled with the end of his football career and, rather than look for new opportunities, he’s been out partying a lot while she’s totally focused on their kids and acting.

Insiders say the breakdown of her relationship is not dissimilar to co-star Helen Flanagan’s split from her footballer fiancé Scott Sinclair four years ago.
Flanagan, who played Vincent’s on-screen sister, Rosie, has three children – Matilda, 11, Delilah, eight, and Charlie, five – with Sinclair, but they have been at war since they broke up after 13 years together.
Earlier this year, the Daily Mail revealed Helen and Scott were refusing to speak to each other directly amid a dispute over the sale of their £995,000 former family home. Things got so bad that the former couple started communicating through Helen’s parents.
Helen has said she views their separation as a divorce after so many years together, saying of Scott: ‘I still love him very much, I care about him deeply, but we don’t like each other.’
In what amounts to the ultimate snub in the social media era, Brooke and Kean have now unfollowed one another on Instagram, while Brooke has been spotted without the engagement ring she once displayed so proudly.
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, she offered what now appears to have been a carefully worded acknowledgement of the break-up.
Alongside a collection of photographs documenting her summer with friends and her sons – which conspicuously failed to include any of Kean – Brooke posted on Instagram: ‘August… Somehow an ending and a beginning all at once.’

In what has proved to be the darkest and most demanding role of her career, Brooke plays a schoolteacher and drugs counsellor who initially appears to offer guidance to vulnerable 14-year-old Dee Dee Hutchinson but later becomes embroiled in a child-grooming scandal.
Brooke has now been acting for more than two decades, having joined Coronation Street aged 11 in 2004, playing the youngest daughter of Sally and Kevin Webster.
She grew up in front of millions of viewers and became one of the soap’s most recognisable stars, with producers entrusting her with a groundbreaking storyline in which Sophie came out as a lesbian and fell in love with her best friend Sian Powers. The plot helped Coronation Street win Broadcast of the Year at the 2010 Stonewall Awards.
And her popularity soon extended well beyond Weatherfield. In 2018, she reached the final of Dancing On Ice with professional partner Matej Silecky, 32, finishing runner-up to the singer and reality TV star Jake Quickenden, 38.
By then, Kean was already a fixture in her life. Introduced through mutual friends in 2016, the couple moved in together the following year and announced they were expecting their first child in April 2019.
At the time, Brooke spoke glowingly of her partner: ‘Kean brings out the best in me.’ Brooke took maternity leave from Coronation Street when their son Mexx was born in October 2019, and Monroe followed in May 2021, leaving her caring for two boys under the age of two.
Though she never formally ruled out a return to the cobbles, Brooke took what became a prolonged absence from acting to dedicate herself to her young family.
She has since admitted that she struggled under the ‘overwhelming pressure’ of raising two young children and cried for much of her first year of motherhood.

The Gorton-born defender had progressed through Manchester City’s academy before playing for Bury, Oldham Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United.
But an injury during his first start for West Bromwich Albion in 2021 brought it all crashing down. His studs caught in the turf as he turned and another player fell on him.
Kean heard a ‘pop’ in his knee and was diagnosed with a serious ACL injury from which he never sufficiently recovered to resume his career.
After making just three appearances for West Brom, he was released in May 2023 and announced his early retirement from football that November on his 27th birthday.
Kean described Brooke as his ‘rock’ during the ordeal, publicly telling her: ‘I will never be able to repay you for the support you give me.’
And by then, the couple were happily engaged. Kean had proposed on their sixth anniversary in April 2022, during which he arranged for an igloo to be erected in their garden and hired a private chef to cook Brooke’s favourite dish, lasagne.
But their honeymoon period was soon over. While Kean attempted to come to terms with leaving football, Brooke began the daunting task of resuming the acting career she’d placed on hold.
‘Brooke is another example of a young soap star who has struggled to keep a marriage together,’ says my source. ‘But she simply could not take it any more.’
When Kean proposed, Brooke had just left Coronation Street to devote herself to motherhood. Now that the wedding is off, Brooke faces one of her biggest challenges to date – juggling the most complex material of her career alongside navigating the breakdown of her relationship and caring for her young sons.
