MOUNT HOOD, Oregon – A hiker was rescued from Oregon’s Mount Hood after spending nearly 24 hours stranded in freezing rain and frigid temperatures when deteriorating weather left him disoriented and unable to navigate the mountain’s rugged terrain.

On Saturday evening, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a lost hiker on the south side of Oregon’s tallest mountain after incoming clouds, deteriorating visibility and heavy rain caused him to veer off course.

The hiker became stranded atop a waterfall in the lower Big Zigzag Canyon. Although uninjured, he was exposed to Mount Hood’s harsh high-altitude conditions, enduring freezing rain, near-freezing temperatures and brutal weather.

According to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, search-and-rescue coordinators launched a rescue mission, deploying teams from Portland Mountain Rescue and Clackamas County Search and Rescue, with volunteers arriving at the Timberline Lodge command post at about 4 a.m. Sunday.

Search-and-rescue volunteers battled freezing rain, high winds, low visibility and even snowfall during the complex rescue operation.

Once reinforcements arrived, rescue crews escorted the hiker up the canyon and safely back to Timberline Lodge, where the mission concluded at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

“The incident is a reminder of how easy it is to become disoriented descending on Mt. Hood, especially in inclement weather,” Portland Mountain Rescue said in a statement. “PMR urges backcountry travelers to carry a GPS, compass and paper map, and to consult them frequently when the terrain is unfamiliar.”
