A failed power transfer unit could result in loss of drive power or vehicle rollaway, which increases the risk of a crash or injury, according to NHTSA.

WASHINGTON — More than 60,000 Jeep Cherokees have been recalled due to a power transfer unit that could fail.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a failed power transfer unit could result in a loss of drive power or a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

In total, 61,711 Jeep Cherokees sold between 2019 and 2023 are being recalled.

A remedy to fix the issue is currently being developed, and owners will be notified by a letter when that becomes available.

Owners of the recalled vehicles can contact Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the manufacturer of Jeep, customer service at 1-800-853-1403. The recall number is 40D.

Vehicle identification numbers involved in the recall will be searchable starting May 14 on the NHTSA.gov website.
