Millions of Americans across Midwest, Great Lakes under severe storm threat heading into the week ahead

A multiday flash flood and severe weather threat is taking shape across the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Sunday into early next week. Get the latest forecast: 

Heavy downpours, severe storms and a flash flood threat are looming over  parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes heading into the work week ahead, including several major cities from Chicago to Pittsburgh.

A surge of moisture from the Gulf is streaming north, and will collide with a developing low-pressure system on Sunday, sparking severe thunderstorms across the Midwest, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

Large-scale organized thunderstorms are expected to form and sweep through northern Illinois, eastern Iowa and southern Wisconsin, bringing severe weather and a significant flash flood threat, especially to urban areas.

A second round of rain and storms will follow along the main cold front later Sunday evening.

A level 2 out of 5 severe storm threat is in effect on Sunday for parts of the Midwest, including northern Illinois, eastern Iowa and western Indiana.

Severe storms remain likely on Monday, as a slow-moving cold front driven by abundant moisture and instability moves into the Midwest and southern Great Lakes. 

Monday’s level 2 of 5 severe storm threat shifts east slightly, and covers major cities, including Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

Damaging winds will be the primary hazard with the storms on Monday.

However, storms that track over the same area over and over again also pose a flash flood threat. 

As we move into Tuesday, the front will continue its trek to the East, renewing chances for heavy showers and thunderstorms across the Midwest and Ohio Valley.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Widespread rain totals of 2 to 3 inches are expected from Chicago to Cleveland, with localized pockets of 3 to 5 inches of rain possible in northern Indiana and Ohio where those repeat showers occur.

 A 2 out of 4 flash flood threat is in place along the southern Great Lakes starting Sunday and continuing through Wednesday, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
