MIAMI, Florida – In Miami, rainstorms ain’t nothing to mess with, but this summer, Will Smith’s famous lyric about the Florida city has not exactly reigned true.
As September rapidly approaches with summer’s closure and the arrival of fall, Miami is heading into the final days of August with its official rainfall total running well below the usual pace for the heart of South Florida’s wet season.

The latest preliminary climate report from the National Weather Service showed Miami International Airport had measured 3.40 inches of rain through Aug. 23, which was 3.53 inches below normal for that point in the month.

The gauge also recorded just 10 days with at least 0.01 inches of rain, despite August typically being one of Miami’s wettest months, according to NWS Miami climate data.

Much of Florida remains gripped by drought after a dry summer, with 67.1% of the state classified in drought, including 30.4% in severe drought and 9.7% in the extreme category.

The U.S. Drought Monitor estimates that about 14.7 million Floridians live in drought-affected areas.
Daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms will remain in the forecast across Florida and much of the Southeast through the end of August, bringing the risk of locally heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, by the end of the weekend, much of the Southeast could pick up 1 to 3 inches of rain, with localized totals topping 3 inches where slow-moving or repeatedly developing storms set up.
No single day is expected to stand out as especially wet, but the persistent pattern could disrupt outdoor plans for millions and provide pockets of drought relief.
