While you may think quakes are a western US problem, some of the largest temblors in US history have happened in the East.
ATKA, Alaska – A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the Aleutian Islands in southwestern Alaska just before midnight local time Saturday night, adding to all the recent seismic activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
No tsunami threat has been issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake struck at 11:35 p.m. (8:35:18 UTC) about 61.5 miles southeast of Atka at a depth of about 6 miles.

So far, the USGS said no one has reported feeling the shaking. This could be largely due to the distance from the epicenter to the island.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is the most seismically and volcanically active region on Earth, with frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions caused by the movement of these tectonic plates.
Additionally, Guatemala and Nicaragua were recently rattled along the Ring of Fire with magnitude 4.2 and 4.6 earthquakes, respectively.
The countries were also rattled by a powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake on July 17, adding to the region’s recent seismic activity.
