THE TAKEAWAY

  • Hawaii’s Big Island was rattled by a magnitude 4.1 earthquake on Monday.
  • Officials say aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks.
  • A magnitude 6.0 earthquake happened in the same area in May.

BIG ISLAND, Hawaii – A magnitude 4.1 earthquake rattled Hawaii’s Big Island on Monday, and officials are warning that aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake happened about 10 miles south-southeast of Hōnaunau-Nāpōʻopoʻo on the Big Island at a depth of 14 miles below sea level. The rattling took place at 9:24 a.m. local time.

It’s the latest earthquake to rattle the Pacific Ring of Fire — which is the most seismically and volcanically active region on Earth, with frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions caused by the movement of these tectonic plates.

The USGS said this earthquake is likely an aftershock of the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that happened on May 23. That earthquake happened in the same area as Monday’s quake.

There was no tsunami threat with these earthquakes, according to officials.

The quake had no apparent impacts on either Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes, according to the USGS.

No damage to buildings or infrastructure has been reported and is unlikely based on the earthquake’s intensity.

The USGS said there have been dozens of reports of shaking, mostly across the west of the Big Island, with a few reports from Maui and O’ahu.

Just days ago, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Hawaii‘s Big Island beneath an undersea volcano, part of unrest that began about a week ago, according to the USGS.

Hawaii’s Big Island was recently impacted by former Hurricane Lala, which brought over 2 feet of rain to parts of the island, causing extensive damage. The Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park was temporarily closed due to the storm.

The USGS said the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory will continue to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.
