EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM Studios has landed film rights to New York Times bestselling author Ali Hazelwood’s novel, Love, Theoretically.

It Ends With Us author Colleen Hoover will produce with her Heartbones Entertainment partner Lauren Levine alongside Max Siemers and Tanner Anderson for Magic Hour Entertainment.

Along for the Ride filmmaker Sofia Alvarez is directing the romantic comedy and will adapt the screenplay. She’ll also EP with Hazelwood.

The Berkley published Love, Theoretically follows rival physicists who collide in a vortex of academic feuds and false identities. The project reps a reunion for Siemers and Alvarez after the pair collaborated on the first two films in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy. The news comes in advance of the Sept. 23, 2026 Prime Video premiere of the feature take of Hazelwood’s The Love Hypothesis which stars Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman. The movie was featured this past weekend at Prime Video’s all-day inaugural immersive event Obsessed Fest which brought fans face-to-face with the stars, creators, and worlds behind the most buzzworthy YA titles.

Alvarez is a NY-based playwright and filmmaker. She is best known for her film adaptations of Jenny Han’s bestselling novels To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and To All the Boys 2: P.S. I Still Love You, both for Netflix. Along For The Ride, her directorial debut, based on the novel by Sarah Dessen, was released on Netflix in May 2022. Currently Alvarez is adapting the fantasy romance epic, Divine Rivals, based on the book by Rebecca Ross. The project is set up at Paramount with Di Bonaventura Pictures producing. In television, she wrote for the first two seasons of Simon Rich’s Man Seeking Woman (FXX). In theater, Alvarez’s plays include Kill Corp (Warehouse Theater, Williamstown Theater Festival), Nylon (BTP / Theaterlab), Friend Art (Second Stage), Panelists (Dorset Theater Festival Pipeline Series), The Fish Bowl (Juilliard), and Between Us Chickens (SCR / EST LA) among others. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School and Bennington College. Alvarez is repped by UTA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein.

Heartbones Entertainment is also already in business with Amazon MGM Studios. The banner is producing Verity, based on Hoover’s bestselling novel, which stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett which will hit theaters on Oct. 2. The company’s debut feature, Reminders of Him, played in theaters back in March via Universal where it made $89M worldwide off a $25M production cost.

Magic Hour Entertainment recently completed production on the feature Ded, from Oscar nominated director Carlos López Estrada. The feature is a silent film starring Estrada, Camila Mendes and Eugenio Derbez. Siemers is known for producing the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before feature trilogy at Netflix, based on the popular book series by Jenny Han. The films are widely credited for reigniting the YA romantic comedy genre and proving that streaming platforms could build trilogies. His other previous feature producing credits include Love at First Sight, Spontaneous, Hello Goodbye and Everything In Between and Before I Fall.

Hazelwood is a No. 1 New York Times and global bestselling author, known for such titles as The Love Hypothesis, Deep End, Bride, among others. Her books have sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. Hazelwood is represented by UTA and Thao Le at Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency.
