🌊WATCH OUT: Lifeguards in Newport Beach, California, are warning about dangerous waves after swells swept a surfer over a jetty on Sunday. Tropical Storm Marie is churning hundreds of miles southwest of San Diego, but is still expected to generate life-threatening surf through Tuesday.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – A lifeguard dove into action to save a surfer in dangerous waves fueled by severe storm conditions in California.
As Tropical Storm Marie continues to churn in the Pacific, the storm’s effects are reaching the shores of Southern California, where days of life-threatening surf plague the region.
Tropical Storm Marie is producing maximum sustained wind gusts as strong as 60 mph, which has helped fuel dangerously high surf, as seen in Newport Beach, California, this week, where lifeguards are kept on high alert due to unsafe conditions.

A surfer was in the ocean trying to enjoy the large waves before being swept over a jetty due to the surf’s raw power and then shoved off the rocks back into the water.

Observing the struggle from afar, a lifeguard jumped into action, running into the ocean equipped with a buoy and flippers to help quickly and safely reach the surfer.
The lifeguard was able to quickly reach the surfer, making his way through the rough waves.

A High Surf Advisory and Coastal Flooding Advisory remain in effect for the area until Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Thankfully, no injuries were reported thanks to the quick response from the lifeguard on duty.
Surfer dives back into the water as rough waves create dangerous conditions.
