Torrential rain prompted the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue several Flash Flood Emergencies for life-threatening flash flooding across east-central Indiana late Wednesday morning with more than 700,000 customers still without power after a deadly windstorm raced parts of the Midwest and the Ohio Valley Tuesday. In addition to the flooding, more severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts are expected across central and southern Illinois, Indiana and western Kentucky through Wednesday evening.
MUNCIE, Indiana – Flash Flood Emergencies were issued Wednesday across east-central Indiana as torrential rainfall caused life-threatening flash flooding across the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) urged residents to move to higher ground in several counties, including Wayne, Fayette, Delaware, Franklin and Union.
Catastrophic flooding has devastated parts of Indiana, forcing evacuations, sweeping vehicles off flooded roadways and destroying numerous homes as torrential rainfall inundates the region. Emergency crews are going door to door to help residents evacuate as life-threatening flooding continues across east-central Indiana.
Local travel restrictions were issued as numerous roads became impassable. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office said several vehicles were swept off flooded roadways, although no injuries have been reported.
In Muncie, officials said evacuations were underway due to ongoing flooding, with emergency personnel going door-to-door to help residents safely evacuate affected homes.

The flooding comes as severe storms stretch at least 250 miles long and 60 miles wide on Tuesday.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, destructive storms that produced 90 to 100 mph winds moved across northern Indiana.
Authorities reported a 4-year-old was killed Tuesday when a tree fell onto a home in Geneva Township, Indiana, during the storms, according to the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office.
The storms have also left more than 292,400 customers across Indiana without power.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun held a news conference earlier Wednesday to assess damage from Tuesday’s severe storms and coordinate resources as widespread power outages, flooding and severe weather continue across the state.
“Between storm damage, widespread power outages and flooding, hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers have been impacted across the state,” Braun said during the news conference. “I’ve directed our agencies to work around the clock alongside local officials, first responders and utility crews to get resources where they’re needed.”
Braun directed the state’s emergency response teams to remain prepared for changing conditions.
