Bigger is not always better – just look at the latest aircraft transforming long-haul travel.

The Airbus A321XLR is a special long-range aircraft designed to carry fewer passengers – but with a longer fuselage and extra fuel tank, allowing it to fly for up to 11 hours.

On board, interiors are comfortable; the model offers a long-haul passenger experience including wider economy seats and fully flat business class seats.

It delivers a 30 per cent reduction in fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft, lowering CO2 emissions and noise footprints.

Plus, all Airbus aircraft are capable of operating with 50 per cent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at current, with an aim to reach up to 100 per cent SAF capability by 2030, directly supporting the aviation industry’s sustainability goals.

Unsurprisingly, airlines are jumping on board – quite literally.

Would you trade big jets for a more comfortable, eco-friendly flight with fewer passengers?

United Airlines has announced it will fly nine new nonstop transatlantic routes to lesser-visited destinations, including Marseille and Ljubljana, on the A321XLR.

The aircraft can seat up to 244 people, but the United configuration will have space for 150.

The airline has ordered 50 of these aircraft, with the first routes to commence on December 1.

The Airbus A321XLR was designed to be the airline’s most premium narrowbody airplane.

The United plane has 32 premium seats – 16 more than the Boeing 757s it replaces – including a new all-aisle access lie-flat United Polaris suite with a privacy door.

Every seat has a large, 4K OLED screen with Bluetooth connectivity, ranging in size from 19in in Polaris, 16in in United Premium Plus and 13in in United Economy.

Plus, everyone has access to larger overhead bins with room for bags – 60 per cent more than before – and a snack bar in the rear of the economy cabin.

In addition, in-seat connectivity is available to all passengers, while the latest lighting system enhances the overall passenger experience.

It’s not the only airline using the new Airbus design.

Ireland’s national carrier Aer Lingus became the second in the world to operate the A321XLR in 2024.

The airline flies the narrow-body aircraft with 16 luxurious business class seats and 168 spacious economy seats.

In economy, each seat is 18 inches wide for extra comfort. For entertainment, there’s also a 12-inch high-definition touchscreen for each passenger.

Meanwhile business class passengers can expect lie-flat beds and a 4K ultra-high-definition 18-inch touch screen.

Plus, Canada’s flag carrier Air Canada, as well as Saudia, the national flag carrier of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, have taken delivery of their first A321XLR planes.

Other carriers such as Qantas, Wizz Air and American Airlines will be flying routes on the plane too.
