Group of young great white sharks confirmed near beaches in Maine

Video from Wednesday shows a few great white sharks in search of food near the coast of Pine Point Beach in Maine. Officials have reminded residents to use caution when in local waters amid the influx of activity. 

SCARBOROUGH, Maine– A group of young great white sharks were spotted near Pine Point Beach in southern Maine over the last few days, prompting local officials to warn beachgoers. 

The police department in Scarborough, Maine first posted about the shark sightings on Tuesday, when two young great white sharks between 6 and 8 feet long were confirmed in the waters off Pine Point Beach. 

Video captured by a fisherman on Tuesday near Pine Point Beach showed a white shark swimming very close.

The next day, Wednesday, Scarborough police posted again. This time, a group of five to seven white sharks were spotted around the same area off Pine Point Beach.

Video showed one of the great white sharks in shallow waters near an empty beach on Wednesday. 

Video from Wednesday shows a great white shark swimming in the shallow waters close to a beach near Scarborough, Maine. Young great white sharks have been reported nearby in the last few days.

Scarborough police warned people going to local beaches and swimming in the area to be cautious and vigilant.

“The sharks were observed swimming and feeding in nearshore waters,” police said. 

The department stressed that no injuries or aggressive behavior was reported toward humans. 

It’s believed that the increase in activity is because of prey availability for the sharks, which typically feed on seals and baitfish.

A group of great white sharks were reported near the beach in Scarborough, Maine, this week. Video shows at least two of the sharks swimming around on Wednesday.

Local agencies are continuing to monitor the activity and warn people to remain aware when enjoying the local waters.
