Gladys Knight‘s husband, Williams McDowell, is addressing fans about the singer’s health one year after the singer’s son raised concerns.
Last year, Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, expressed concerns about her behavior and questioned whether she should remain onstage.
Some longtime fans still praise the Empress of Soul’s voice at 82, but recent performances have worried others.
Knight’s son escalated his concerns by filing a complaint with North Carolina officials.
In 2025, Hankerson accused McDowell of exploitation and manipulating the singer into maintaining a grueling tour schedule. He alleged that he has watched his mother “zoning out” onstage, forget lyrics and rely on background singers to recover.
His concerns grew after Knight reportedly wandered into another Baltimore hotel in a confused state and couldn’t answer basic questions. He claims staff recognized her but said she could not answer basic questions before contacting her daughter, Kenya.
“I saw this coming… Everybody who truly loves my mom saw it,” Hankerson told The Shade Room.
He later claimed, “They’re having to rewind the teleprompters because my mom is forgetting to even look at them. Song lyrics are one thing, but it’s deeper than that.”
Some fans saw similar concerns during her Aug. 18 Detroit concert. Knight looked exhausted and took several breaks while backup singers helped carry the show.
Knight later announced she would reduce her performances.
“After much soul searching I’ve decided that I will be easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward,” she wrote on social media on Aug. 27.
In a lengthy statement, the singer said she plans to work on projects with her husband, William McDowell, and spend more time with her grandchildren.

Concern intensified after additional footage from her July 25 Hollywood Bowl performance surfaced. Knight appeared to lose her place during “Midnight Train to Georgia.”
She turned away from the audience and began walking offstage. A backup singer attempted to guide her back. Concertgoers again claimed Knight was “lost and confused” on stage.
The “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” singer has tour dates scheduled through mid-November, but her husband says her health will determine how long she stays on the road.
McDowell said Knight has not been diagnosed with dementia and plans to have her evaluated by a doctor soon.
He told TMZ he’ll use the Sept. 5 show to test whether she’s well enough to continue. If she struggles, he’ll remove her from the remaining dates.
“No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing,” McDowell expressed.
Speculation about Knight’s health is not new. In 2025, her son, Shanga Hankerson, accused McDowell of pushing an exhausting touring schedule.
Knight denied his claims of alleged mental and financial abuse and declared herself “healthy and happy.”

One fan offered more details about the moment, saying Gladys Knight seemed confused during the concert and relied on her backup singer to carry the performance.
“Gladys turned her back to the audience and just stared, then she started to walk offstage while the backup singer was still singing. The backup singer took Gladys by the arm, trying to get Gladys to come back, but Gladys ignored her and kept walking, that’s where the video ended.”
The longtime fan, who has followed Knight since the 1970s, added, “There is no one like her. It was hard to see her so disoriented.”
Knight has not announced a dementia diagnosis. McDowell has acknowledged that his wife has “good days and bad” and said she would undergo a medical evaluation.

Now, fans are debating whether her next chapter should happen away from the stage.
“Looks like Gladys Knight is calling it a career & deservedly so at 82,” one fan wrote.
“The internet and media finally bullied Auntie Gladys Knight into retiring,” another complained.
A third offered perhaps the simplest sentiment: “I love her but if things is getting bad for her time to retire. I rather have the queen around more time than hitting a stage. She paid her dues.”
The allegations recall the family turmoil surrounding late “Good Times” star John Amos. His daughter accused his son of neglect and financial exploitation. Police closed that investigation without finding evidence. Amos denied being abused.

Male singers Ron Isley and Charlie Wilson have continued performing amid health concerns. Frankie Beverly kept touring while visibly struggling before his 2024 death. Other entertainers have stepped away when performing became too demanding.
Knight has already delivered several lifetimes of music. She won seven Grammys, entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the Pips and received a Kennedy Center Honor.
