Garrett Haake has been named NBC News‘ chief White House correspondent, filling a key role for coverage of the Donald Trump administration.

He will succeed Peter Alexander, who recently left the network to serve as anchor for MS NOW.

In a memo to staffers, Chloe Arensberg, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief, wrote, “Garrett has been an essential voice in our White House coverage, bringing sharp reporting, deep sourcing and an authoritative presence to some of the most consequential stories of our time. That commitment was on full display during the White House Correspondents’ dinner, when he ran at full speed in his tux from the Washington Hilton to the White House briefing room to ensure NBC could ask the President a question—a moment that reflects his relentless drive to get the story when it matters most.”

In his role, Haake will lead the network’s White House coverage, having been named senior correspondent on the team last year. Before that, he was senior Capitol Hill correspondent, including reporting on January 6 and the turbulent speaker battles of Kevin McCarthy. Haake caught up with McCarthy to get comment from him as he left the House floor after being ousted from that role. Haake also covered all three campaigns of Trump, in 2016 for WUSA-TV and in 2020 and 2024 for NBC News. He also covered the mass shooting tragedy in Uvalde, TX, and Hurricane Florence in North Carolina, among other assignments.

Haake started at NBC News in 2007 as a desk assistant, and then worked in local news in Kansas City and Washington, D.C., before returning to the network in 2017.
