As America counts down to its 250th Birthday, FOX Weather Meteorologist Stephen Morgan breaks down the weather patterns unfolding across the country.
The Fourth of July is always a special day in America, but this year carries even greater significance as the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of its founding. From sea to shining sea, millions of Americans will gather beneath the Stars and Stripes in the name of freedom for parades, barbecues and fireworks, but will the weather cooperate with your plans this Independence Day?
As the U.S. prepares to celebrate, the weather will tell a different story depending on where you live. A sprawling ridge of high pressure will dominate the Central and Eastern U.S., creating a sharp divide in weather conditions across the country.
On one side, intense summer heat will build, while on the other, cooler-than-average temperatures and rounds of thunderstorms could put a damper on patriotic outdoor plans.
While the exact placement of the ridge remains uncertain, long-range forecast models continue to signal its development and strength.
Long-range forecasts highlight above-average temperatures across parts of the Central and Southern Plains, Midwest and East Coast, while the Northwest will see below-average temperatures.

AMERICAN HEAT
Heat is expected to build across much of the Central and Eastern U.S. by late this weekend and intensify through next week. Hot and humid conditions could make it feel more like the triple digits as temperatures climb into the upper 90s and dew points rise into the 70s.

Pockets of extreme heat are possible across the Mississippi Valley, creating dangerous conditions for anyone without adequate cooling or hydration.
Through the Fourth of July, moderate to high heat risks are expected across the Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley, and Great Lakes, where heat index values could approach 100 degrees.

What would the Fourth of July be without a classic summer storm?
The ridge of high pressure driving warmer temperatures may also suppress storm activity, but that doesn’t mean trademark summertime thunderstorms are out of the question.

Beach trips, barbecues and other outdoor activities could be temporarily put on hold for portions of the Northeast, as “ridge-riding storms” on the northern portion of the ridge could bring rounds of scattered sowers and thunderstorms into the Fourth of July.

Following in the footsteps of the trailblazing explorers Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea, let’s venture west.
Across the West Coast, a large dip in the jet stream will likely keep slightly cooler than average temperatures for cities such as Seattle, Los Angeles and in the Rockies.

Spotty monsoonal storms and showers will once again return across portions of the four corners as well.

While we’re still a little way from July 4, the forecast will come into sharper focus as America approaches its 250th birthday.
