A sweeping cold front will push across the eastern U.S. early next week, bringing a refreshing, fall-like air mass and relief from the late-summer heat. FOX Weather Meteorologist Bayne Froney breaks down the forecast.

THE TAKEAWAY

  • Sweeping cold front to usher in fall-like temperatures across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley.
  • Parts of the South will get a break from the late-summer heat.
  • Coolest temperatures will settle into higher elevations and northern interior areas of the East.

The taste of fall weather may be coming early for millions in the East this week.

After a weekend of stormy weather, a sweeping cold front will dive across the eastern United States early next week, putting summer heat on humidity on hiatus and ushering refreshing, fall-like air.

With crippling, triple-digit summer heat making headlines in hotspots like Miami, which hit 100 degrees for the first time in 84 years, and Charleston seeing up to 115 degrees heat indexes, a breath of fresh fall air will feel like a commodity.

The relief comes in the form of a sweeping cold front with high pressure building in behind the front dropping the humidity and allowing overnight temperatures to drop.

Waking up early next week, much of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley will experience morning lows plunging into the 50s, with some of the typically colder spots in the interior Northeast and Appalachians dipping even lower.

The absolute coolest temperatures in the eastern half of the nation will be found in the higher elevations and interior northern regions.

The Adirondacks of New York, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the interior valleys of Maine will see temperatures plummet into the upper 30s and low 40s.

Similarly, the typically colder spots in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Minnesota will drop near the 40-degree mark, bringing a risk for early-season frost.

Summer slows for parts of the Southeast

Summer heat isn’t a joke in the South, and they, too, will see some relief.

Even in the South, where August warmth typically has a strong hold, cities including Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville will see morning lows slide comfortably into the low-to-mid 60s, a welcoming contrast to the muggy mid-70s they’ve endured for months.

In Atlanta especially, computer models are showing an especially refreshing forecast, with dew points dropping into the low 50s to upper 50s, the lowest since the first week of June.

Temperatures and humidity levels will begin to rise and return to average starting Wednesday.

The same can’t be said for the Southern Plains, where a heat wave will persist into next week while also expanding into the Southwest, where daily record high temperatures are expected through at least Tuesday for much of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico and Arizona.
