Denis O’Hare Reacts To ‘The Boroughs’ Cancellation

Deadline broke the news that The Boroughs has been canceled, and now Denis O’Hare has a scheme for how fans can “stick it to Netflix.”

In a seemingly tongue-in-cheek Instagram post O’Hare, who played Wally on the Duffer Brothers’ buzzy sci-fi TV series, says he was “bummed” because “it was such a great show.”

O’Hare then presents his modest proposal: ” I think we still have a couple of days before the end of Emmy voting that everyone should just vote for The Boroughs. You can vote for me if you like.”

His rationale? “Stick it to Netflix and let them know that they made a mistake.”

The actor ends by imagining such an outcome would be “sweet revenge.”

His castmate Geena Davis expressed her own bewilderment at the cancellation to Deadline’s sister publication, The Hollywood Reporter, earlier this week.

“Honestly, I don’t know what happened,” said Davis. “I think it’s probably rare for a show to not get picked up and to have it announced that it’s not being picked up while it’s still in the top 10.”

Per Deadline’s reporting, the cancellation came as something of a surprise. We hear there had been talk about renewing the series starring Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, O’Hare, Clarke Peters and Bill Pullman, and a Season 2 writers room had been opened, a standard practice for many high-profile series. According to sources, one of the ideas floated was to film Seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back.

But that was before The Boroughs, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, debuted to strong reviews but soft ratings last month.

Here is O’Hare’s statement in its entirety:

So, it’s Saturday and I’m just thinking about the fact that Netflix canceled The Boroughs and how really bummed I am because it was such a great show. It was such a great show and people really seem to love it. I’ve been astounded how many people have come up to me and talked about how much they like the show — and not just like, you know, old people but I’m talking about anybody, people who are, you know, in their 30s or 40s with kids.

Everyone seemed to find something to relate to. Anyway, so I think we still have a couple of days before the end of Emmy voting that everyone should just vote for The Boroughs. You can vote for me if you like. But also like Bill Pullman and Alfre Woodard and Alfie [Alfred] Molina and Geena Davis and Clarke Peters, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremelberg and vote for The Boroughs for Best Series and, you know, stick it to Netflix and let them know that they made a mistake, you know, because I think it would be sweet revenge. Anyway, I love the show, I miss it and, you know, whatever.

Rosy Cordero and Nellie Andreeva contributed to this report.
