The Norwegian teen was discovered floating in the sea at around 9am this morning after she vanished from a family holiday.

Her devastated mum alerted police after waking up and discovering that she was not at their rental apartment in an area called Barranco Agua La Perra very near to Puerto Rico.

Detectives probing the death say that they are open to “all theories”.

The girl was found around 200 metres from the coast and a rocky cove called Balito beach after several witnesses alerted emergency services.

The Canary Islands have been hit by unexpected storms and strong gusts of wind in the past week and a half, causing choppy conditions at sea.

Thousands of Brits were left stranded after Storm Therese wreaked havoc across the Spanish archipelago, with Las Palmas – in Gran Canaria’s north – and Tenerife bearing the brunt.

Winds of up to 70mph, torrential rain and even snow hit the region, with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) saying that some areas could receive more than a year’s worth of rain in just a matter of days.

It was the worst storm to hit parts of the island in over a decade.

Warnings were also issued for choppy seas with waves reaching up to 20 feet.

Tourists filmed a the sea smashing into properties on the beach front in Tenerife and flooding nearby streets with several inches of water.

In Gran Canaria, heavy rain caused the partial collapse of a 20-metre wall in Playa del Aguila, while other areas were hit by flash flooding and debris blocking major routes.

Up to 45,000 British citizens live in the Canary Islands, while almost 6.3 UK tourists holiday there every year.
