Arizona’s first Buc-ee’s opens June 22 in Goodyear with a new policy requiring credit card payments at pumps, causing temporary holds on accounts.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Arizona’s first Buc-ee’s is opening on June 22 in Goodyear, but a new fuel payment policy could catch some drivers off guard.
The popular Texas-based travel center chain announced that customers who plan to pay with credit or debit cards will be required to pay at the pump. That means drivers will no longer be able to pre-pay for gas inside the store with a card.
This change also comes with a potential downside: temporary holds on customer accounts. Depending on the card, those holds can range from $75 to more than $200 and may take up to 72 hours to clear. During that time, the money is unavailable to the card user for spending.
There is also a change for gift card users. According to The Arizona Republic, Buc-ee’s gift cards can be used for gas through April 1, 2027. After that date, gift cards will be limited to in-store purchases for food and merchandise.
Anyone using cash can still pre-pay inside.
Buc-ee’s has not officially said why the policy is being implemented. However, experts say pay-at-the-pump systems can speed up lines by reducing how long vehicles sit at fuel stations.
The Goodyear location will span about 74,000 square feet, feature 120 fuel pumps and is expected to bring around 200 jobs to the West Valley.
