It’s the last call for summer — a chance for one more sun-drenched vacation, perhaps with fewer crowds and (if you’re lucky) cooler weather. Here are five new properties where you can make the most of the passing season, including a boutique hotel in Cape Cod, a glamping retreat in New Hampshire’s White Mountains region and an adults-only escape on Turkey’s Aegean coast.
Dalton, N.H.
This new 45-tent glamping getaway is set on 86 acres amid meadows and forests, with views of the soaring Presidential Range. It’s a convenient base from which to tackle hiking and biking trails through the White Mountain National Forest and explore the Connecticut River. You’re also about a half-hour drive to Franconia Notch State Park with its Flume Gorge, and to the Mount Washington Cog Railway, which has been climbing to the summit since the 19th century. When you prefer to stay on the property, the hotel has a yoga deck, more than 20 miles of trails connecting the property to Dalton Mountain, and board and lawn games.
When it comes to the tents, there’s no one-size-fits-all. Choose from “deluxe” tents with king-size beds, wood-burning stoves, bathrooms and decks. “Suite” tents have those features, plus a lounge area with a queen-size sofa bed. Opt for a “Stargazer” tent, if you’d like to look up at the sky as you drift off to sleep, with a window above the bed. There are also setups for families and groups. There is E.V. charging, but Wi-Fi is intentionally not offered.
Breakfast and dinner can be had on-site at Embers, which serves salads, charcuterie, fish, local wines, ciders and beers. (Grab-’n-go snacks and lunches are also available.) End the day under the stars beside a fire pit. The s’mores are free. Prices from $251 a night. The camp is open through Oct. 11.
Falmouth, Mass.
Built in the mid-1800s, this former home is now a 21-room-and-suite boutique hotel on the southern shore of Cape Cod. It’s a short stroll to Surf Drive Beach, and about a 20-minute walk to Main Street in Falmouth. Homey and relaxed, the hotel embraces its coastal setting with rooms decorated in earthy colors along with pale wood and woven touches designed by Boston-based Reider + Co. Choose from rooms with water, pool and garden views. Some have patios; all have minifridges. A light breakfast is included.
Drive 10 minutes to check out the Nobska Lighthouse Station, or try birding at the Knob, where you can enjoy a nature walk and water views. Both are in Woods Hole, the village that’s home to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Mass Audubon’s Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary in East Falmouth has hundreds of holly trees and many species of dragonflies, and is about a 15-minute drive away. When you return, go for a dip in the hotel’s saltwater pool. Or take in the sea air with a glass of wine on Shore Haven’s front porch, patio or beside a fire pit. Prices from $299 a night. The hotel is open this year until mid-November.
This 67-room-and-suite getaway on the harbor opened in June with nautical flair inspired by Sag Harbor’s maritime history. The rooms — including garden retreats with patios and lofts with harbor views — have lighting fixtures with blown glass shells, draperies with bold stripes, and timber poster beds meant to evoke a ship’s interior. Some have outdoor space; all have Bluetooth speakers and minibars with complimentary snacks.
Formerly Baron’s Cove, the hotel has been reimagined and is now part of Faraway Hotels. Main Street’s shops and restaurants are a short walk away, though the hotel’s lobby bar and patio draw guests and locals alike, from coffee at breakfast to cocktails at sunset. Play padel ($25 a person for one hour), go for a bike ride (free rentals), cool off in the pool, where pastel-colored daybeds and chaise longues beckon, or unwind with a spa treatment. Havens Beach is nearby, and chairs and beach towels are complimentary, as is parking.
The hotel’s restaurant, Zagara, inspired by the Amalfi Coast (think pastas and seafood) and led by the chef Jarad McCarroll, offers dinner in an airy space that is at once beachy and polished, with a Venetian plaster fireplace and antique mirrors. Both the dining room and the outdoor terrace have harbor views. Prices from $901 a night; the hotel will be open year-round with a break from Jan. 3 to Feb. 11. Dog-friendly rooms are available at an additional cost.
Bodrum, Turkey
All of the 58 rooms and suites at this new adults-only (age 16 and older) boutique hotel on the northern shore of the Bodrum Peninsula face the sea and have balconies or terraces. A number have shared or private pools. The vibe is minimal and bohemian, making wide use of linen, marble and reclaimed stone. As serene as the atmosphere may be, who wants to stay indoors when the Aegean awaits? You can paddle board, snorkel or swim in the pool. Join a guided hike or an olive oil-pressing class and tasting session. Get to know Bodrum and beyond (like Ephesus and its Roman ruins) with tours offered through the hotel. The property’s jetty makes it easy to take a boat trip to an island or a beach club.
When you return, try a Turkish hammam treatment, or a sound-healing session at dusk. The Round Bar on the hotel’s jetty offers mezze and cocktails, while, by the pool, To Kima restaurant serves Mediterranean fare with Asian-inspired flavors. For dinner, Teyo Bodrum offers Japanese and South American fusion food. Prices from €475 a night, or about $554, including breakfast.
Hvar, Croatia
Overlooking the Adriatic on the sunny island of Hvar, this 154-room-and-suite hotel reopened in August after a top-to-bottom renovation. The rooms — many with balconies, sea views or both — are bright and contemporary, in soft Mediterranean-inspired colors. The restored stone Bishop House, which dates to the 1920s when it was created as a residence for diocese members, is home to some of the suites. The Bishop House is also where you’ll find Mare, which offers light fare like maki rolls, nigiri and poke bowls. Try Veranda for heartier fare such as seafood, pasta and sweet treats, including tiramisù. For a quick bite, stop at Loggia.
While Hvar has long been a favorite destination of boldface names and partygoers, Sirena, set in a cove, says the emphasis is on tranquillity, where a guest can unfurl on a lounge chair on the beach or by the pool. The hotel offers “silent sailing excursions” to serene beaches, and each evening a bell signals a 15-minute “pause” on the hotel terrace during which guests are guided through breathing exercises. The hotel also has a spa and a yoga deck and offers weekly cultural activities, like a sunset tasting of honeys and sparkling wine with a local beekeeper.
The hotel has a complimentary shuttle to the town of Hvar, rich in ancient history and architecture. The island is also home to the fertile Stari Grad Plain, on Unesco’s World Heritage List. (You can reach Hvar by public ferry or contact Sirena to arrange airport transfers via speedboat or yacht.) Prices from 350 euros a night.
