It’s a chore that many people dread.
And now it turns out you’ve probably been doing your laundry wrong this entire time.
Experts from Which? have revealed the surprising items you should never put in the washing machine.
Topping the list are clothes with embellishments, glitter, lace and fringing, which can disintergrate under the high heat.
And while you might be tempted to pop a dirty tie in there, Which? says this is an absolute no–no.
‘Ties are easy to shrink or damage,’ the consumer champion explained.
Meanwhile, if the instructions on an item’s label are unclear, it’s best to be cautious.
‘If you’re thinking about washing an item which has a faded care label, or is missing one altogether, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and assume it can’t go in the washing machine,’ Which? added.

Which? lists eight items that should never go in the machine machine.
Festival fans may be surprised to learn that clothes with glitter, lace, fringing, and embellishments top the list.
‘The hot water in your machine can break down adhesives, and things like sequins can also damage the drum or door glass as they’re spinning round at high speed,’ it said.
Suits and ties are next – even if they’re made from materials that normally cope well in the machine.
Which? explained: ‘Even if your suit is made from cotton or polyester, the interfacing (which gives them their structured shape) can dissolve and bend out of shape in water.’
Memory foam pillows are too delicate and can easily be torn, while anything with fur, leather, suede, velvet or rayon should alo be avoided.
‘These fabrics are better off going to the dry cleaners as they will only get damaged in a washing machine,’ the consumer champion added.

If you often wear workwear, you might be tempted to chuck your garments into the machine, but this could prove dangerous.
These items are often designed to be non–flammable – and washing them could remove the safety coating.
Heavy items that can throw the washing machine off balance are next, followed by some cuddly toys.
Which? said: ‘Always check the label, but certain brands of soft toys (including Jellycats and Beanie Babies) are handwash–only for the most part.’
Finally (and somewhat unsurprisingly), coins, keys and jewellery are an absolute no–go.
‘Make sure these items are removed from your pockets before washing to avoid them damaging the drum or door glass, or getting lodged in the drainage system,’ Which? added.
Things you can put in the washing machine
Which? has also revealed several surprising items that you can put in the washing machine.
Instead of hand–scrubbing shower curtains, you can remove these from the shower rail and pop them in the washing machine.
‘Choose a delicate or handwash cycle if your machine has one, as they have the slowest spin speeds,’ Which? advises.
‘Adding in a couple of large towels will help to balance out the load too. There’s no need to use a specific detergent.’
Many – but not all – exercise mats can go in, as well as smelly pet accessories like collars, leads, and washing machines.
Backpacks are generally fine too, although it’s best to avoid anything with leather, added embroidery, or specialist waterproof coating.
Meanwhile, most hats and hair accessories can be popped in the machine, along with rugs.
And while it might sound unusual, several cleaning items are also on Which?’s list.
‘Many cleaning items such as mop heads and microfibre cloths are now marketed as machine–washable – great news for the planet and your pocket, since you won’t need to keep replacing them,’ it added.
