ST. LOUIS – In this season of reflections and new beginnings, Eunice Halverson can’t help but think about her daughter.
“Krista was our first child,” said Halverson. “She was a vivacious fun-loving girl.”
Krista was diagnosed with transverse myelitis and central nervous system (CNS) vasculitis, two rare auto-immune diseases. Because of her illnesses Krista wondered whether she would be able to donate her organs.
“I said, ‘Let’s just leave it up to the professionals,’” Halverson said.
In fact, Halverson says Krista’s doctor was skeptical that her organs could be used to extend life.
“Because CNS vasculitis usually ruins the organs.” Halverson explained.
After Krista died, doctors at Mid-America Transplant conducted a series of tests and discovered Krista’s organs were not damaged.
“We were so excited about it in our grief.” Halverson said.
Krista’s organs were used to change the lives of four people.
“I will go to my heavenly home thinking it was a miracle.” Halverson smiled. “I know it was a miracle.”
