LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – Two people were arrested in connection with a retail theft incident that led to a high-speed pursuit and crash over the weekend in San Bernardino County.
Officers with the Upland Police Department responded to reports of a “theft in progress” at a store in Colonies Crossroads located at 1931 N. Campus Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 25.
In store surveillance footage released by UPD, a woman in a sitting in a motorized shopping cart is seen removing products from several different aisles in the retail outlet before being confronted by another woman, presumably a store employee, at the exit doors.
She’s then seen getting out of the motorized shopping cart and leaving.
Responding officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle near the Campus Avenue Fire Station as the driver, the female suspect, was attempting to leave the area.
“The vehicle briefly pulled over, let out a male passenger then sped off,” UPD said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “Officers pursued the vehicle down Campus Avenue while other assisting officers arrested the male passenger.”
Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Aviation Unit helped track the female suspect as she sped off, lost control of the vehicle and hit a curb near Campus Avenue and 8th Street, causing the vehicle to roll on its side.
Officers’ body-worn camera footage shows police surrounding the vehicle with guns drawn as another officer uses a tool to shatter the windshield and pull it back so the suspect could be pulled from the vehicle.
Both the man and woman, according to police, had “no bail” warrants and were arrested. The female suspect will likely be facing additional charges related to retail theft and an attempt to evade police.
