A car that plowed into pedestrians near SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Saturday night left at least six people injured, and a witness tells KTLA that the driver of the car was trying to show off for the crowd.
The crash occurred at 10:23 p.m. in the 4000 block of Century Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Upon arriving at the scene, crews found six victims with injuries and began transporting them to hospitals about 40 minutes later.
The large crowd was near the stadium on Saturday night due to the “No Kings” protests and because the opening match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup between Mexico and the Dominican Republic took place at SoFi; Mexico won the match 3-2.
Most of the injuries sustained by the victims were initially said to be minor, and KTLA 5’s Rich Prickett said from Sky5 late Saturday night that reports indicated one of the victims was a 14-year-old boy.
While that information was not confirmed by law enforcement, witnesses at the scene told KTLA 5’s Gene Kang on Sunday that a 14-year-old was indeed injured in the incident, and a 16-year-old was also among the injured. One man who was protesting said that the driver was trying to show off when he lost control.
“We were [peacefully protesting] and trying to speak up for those who can’t…but some people were trying to take it to the next level,” said Jay Gonzalez. “We saw [the driver] trying to do burnouts and get people’s attention, but once he lost control, we knew it was going to be something bad.”
Video from the scene obtained by KTLA shows a Dodge Charger speeding down the street before it crashed and sustained significant damage. L.A. County Fire Department officials could not immediately provide a cause for the crash or details surrounding the identity of the driver; however, it is believed they were injured.
More information on the incident is expected to be released sometime on Sunday.
