Millions of Americans are hitting the road in record this Independence Day holiday — and if you’re hoping to avoid traffic jams or airport delays, experts say the key is planning your return trip wisely.
The Auto Club of Southern California projects 5.5 million residents will travel at least 50 miles from home during the extended holiday period, which spans nine days from June 28 to July 6.
Nationally, the agency predicts 61.1 million drivers will hit the road.
When to Hit the Road
Transportation analytics company INRIX expects the busiest day on the road will be Sunday, July 6, particularly in the afternoon and early evening hours.
To avoid gridlock, drivers are urged to depart in the early morning.
Experts say some of the worst traffic is expected on:
- I-15 South from Las Vegas to Los Angeles around 5 p.m. Sunday, July 6
If you are attending local celebrations and want to leave your car at home, Uber and MADD are offering rideshare discounts during the holiday weekend.
