CATHERINE O’HARA

(WJW) — The iconic and beloved actress, Catherine O’Hara, sadly passed away on Friday. Although her cause of death has not yet been confirmed, O’Hara has previously shared that she was born with a rare genetic condition, in which her heart sits on the opposite side of her chest.

The condition, known as Situs Inversus, is described by the Cleveland Clinic as a condition that occurs “when the organs in your chest and belly develop in a reversed position of normal anatomy. Various genetic mutations cause the condition.”

O’Hara first spoke about the condition during a Virtual Happy Hour with winemaker Kathryn Hall in 2020.

She explained that she had the type of situs inversus called dextrocardia, where the heart points toward the right side of the chest and other organs are flipped.

During the Virtual Happy Hour, O’Hara said she learned about the condition more than 20 years ago.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, people with situs inversus can lead normal lives. It only affects about 1 in every 10,000 people and is more common among men.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, those with situs inversus may not develop any symptoms or show any signs or complications. But although situs inversus is typically harmless, it can be associated with other health complications or conditions.

Catherine O’Hara, known for her roles on TV shows and movies like “Schitt’s Creek,” “Home Alone,” and “Beetlejuice,” died at 71, TMZ was first to report.

The Associated Press later confirmed O’Hara died “following a brief illness,” according to Creative Artists Agency. She reportedly died at her home in Los Angeles.

O’Hara is survived by her husband and two children.
