A fatal multi-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler has shut down westbound lanes of the 610 South Loop, triggering a hazmat situation and major delays.
HOUSTON — Drivers are facing major delays after a complete roadway closure shut down westbound lanes of the 610 South Loop at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to Houston TranStar.
Officials initially reported a multi-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler just after 9:30 a.m. blocking all westbound lanes. Houston police have since confirmed the crash is fatal. Video from the scene appeared to show a CenterPoint Energy truck heavily damaged on its side near a light pole.
According to TxDOT, the incident also involves a hazmat situation.
TxDOT says crews are on scene assisting with cleanup and traffic control, and drivers should expect the closure to take multiple hours to clear.
No specific timeline has been announced for when the roadway will reopen.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area and plan alternate routes.
Alternate routes to avoid the closure
If you’re traveling westbound on the South Loop, consider these options:
- Exit 610 before MLK Blvd. and use nearby surface streets to bypass the closure
- Use Highway 288 or I-45 as a north–south alternate, depending on your destination
- Consider Highway 90 or Highway 225 to move east or west around the incident area
- Allow extra time and check live traffic conditions before heading out
What drivers should expect
With all westbound mainlanes closed, significant backups are likely as traffic is forced to exit or reroute. Hazmat cleanup is contributing to extended delays, officials say.
Drivers should remain alert, follow posted detours if available, and avoid making last-minute lane changes near the closure.
