VIRGINIA (DC News Now) — Virginia State Police (VSP) Aviation assets from Abingdon, Va., helped rescue at least 54 people from the roof of a Tennessee hospital on Friday as rising flood waters brought on by Hurricane Helene prompted evacuation.
According to VSP, aviation crews rescued people from the roof of the Unicoic County Hospital in Erwin, Tennessee, as rising flood waters from the nearby Nolichuchy River rapidly submerged the hospital.
Ambulances could not safely access the hospital for evacuations. The waters were also impassable by boat, according to Ballad Health.
VSP captured the scene on camera.
