A deputy with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was honored earlier this month after he saved a child from a car that was about to be struck by a train.
Video from the Redlands incident, which was obtained by KTLA through the Instagram page @MorenoValleyMatters2024, shows the off-duty deputy, later identified as Michael Castaneda, run to an SUV that was stuck on train tracks and remove a child as the train comes barreling toward him.
He safely managed to escape with the child just seconds before the vehicle was smashed by the train.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, Castaneda was honored with the Meritorious Valor Award for the “heroic act.”
“A true example of courage and dedication to our community,” the department said on X, formerly Twitter.
