WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputy shot a man suspected of stabbing two people on Thursday afternoon.
Shortly before 3 p.m., two deputies were dispatched to the area of East Potomac Street and North Conococheague Street after receiving a report of a stabbing. Officials were told two people had been stabbed and that the suspect was in an alley “holding a large knife.”
Once at the scene, deputies said they saw a man who matched the suspect’s description. The suspect stood up from a wall in the alley and “charged directly at the Deputies while holding a knife in his hand,” according to a news release from the WCSO.
The deputies ordered the man to stop and drop the knife.
The man ignored their orders, however, and continued to charge them, saying they were going to have to kill him.
One deputy deployed his Taser, but the man continued advancing toward them with the knife.
That’s when the second deputy fired his gun, shooting the suspect.
The man dropped the knife and the deputies were able to secure him and give him aid. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
WCSO detectives spoke to the two stabbing victims. The first man said he was working on a building when he noticed the suspect sitting on a stoop behind him.
The man said he continued working and was attacked from behind without warning.
The suspect eventually stopped and walked away.
The second victim said he was driving through Williamsport and noticed the first victim bleeding in the middle of the roadway at the intersection of Conococheague Street and Potomac Street.
The man said he didn’t know the victim, but stopped to help.
He said he walked to the location where the suspect was and, as he rounded the corner to enter the alley, saw the man with an object in each of his hands.
The WCSO said the suspect charged the second man and stabbed him in the stomach with a curved-bladed knife.
Both of the victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The deputies involved were placed on administrative leave, per WCSO policy.
Charges against the suspect are pending.
