LANDOVER, Md. (DC News Now) — It was not the result Washington Commanders fans were hoping for Sunday as many were heartbroken after the team’s defeat in the NFC Championship game with the Philadelphia Eagles.
But many fans like Ted Abela, better known as Tailgate Ted, are still excited about what the team accomplished this season and nearly making it to the Super Bowl.
“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed, we were 60 minutes away from the Super Bowl. But after I had a chance to sit back and reflect I am not sad. I am excited and proud of what this team accomplished, and I am proud of where we are going,” Abela said.
Abela is a Commander’s super fan. He traveled to every playoff game and tailgated in Tampa, Detroit and Philadelphia. Watching his team walk off the field with a loss was tough but he said he is encouraged about Washington’s future.
“It has been awesome to see our team go on this run and see the Commanders back. We had four wins last year and 14 this year so this was a fantastic season and I am thrilled to watch us succeed in the future,” he said.
Richard Lacey and his wife are also heartbroken the Commander’s dream season came to an end, but they are still showing their team love and support.
“I am proud and grateful we made that far and now we can look forward to next year. I feel we should be even better, and we learned a lot and we’ve done quite well,” Lacey said.
The Lacey family along with Abela said they can’t wait until next season gets underway to watch the first home game in Landover at the Northwest Stadium.
