A DuPage County judge Wednesday denied the pre-trial release of a Warrenville man accused of shooting his wife to death last week, law enforcement officials said.
Just before 11 a.m. on Sept. 5, the Warrenville Police Department responded to the report of a death at the home of Steven Kramer, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s office.
On arrival at the home in the 30W0-100 block of Mulberry Court, a Warrenville officer was met at the door by Kramer, the release states. Kramer informed the officer that his wife, Jaime Neumann, was in a second floor bedroom.
When the officer entered the bedroom, Neumann, 47, was found lying on the floor face up with “blood coming from her mouth, apparent trauma to her face and what appeared to be brain matter on her upper chest,” officials explained in the release.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy concluded that Neumann had been shot six times, including once in her head.
An investigation determined that Kramer allegedly shot his wife multiple times after they engaged in a verbal altercation that turned physical, officials stated in the release.
Authorities explained in the release that Kramer voluntarily went to the Warrenville Police Department, where he was taken into custody. It was not immediately clear how soon after the incident he turned himself in.
“The alleged actions taken by Mr. Kramer were unthinkable,” Warrenville police Chief Sam Bonilla stated in the release, “leaving his family permanently scarred and his children without their mother.”
Kramer first appeared in court Sept. 6 but the case was continued at Kramer’s request, allowing him time to get private counsel.
Kramer, 39, returned to court Wednesday morning and faces charges of first-degree murder, according to the release.
A GoFundMe page has been established to support Neumann’s three daughters.
“The allegation that Mr. Kramer shot his wife multiple times, including once in the head, is extremely upsetting,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin stated in the release. “I offer my sincerest condolences to Jaime’s family and friends as they grieve their loss, particularly her children who are now forced to live a life without the love and support only a mother can provide.”
Kramer is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 7.
