Warmer weather, rain washes over NYC ahead of New Year’s

With Christmastime officially in the rearview — and the wintry chill with it for the time being — warmer weather and rain are forecast to wash over New York City in the days leading up to the New Year.

New Yorkers on Saturday woke up to fog and rain, with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees during the morning hours. The same conditions will likely persist through much of the day, with scattered showers in the forecast for most of the tristate area, the National Weather Service said.

Highs are expected to peak at around 45 degrees, dipping slightly overnight before they warm up again on Sunday. Temperatures could climb to as high 60 degrees, which will likely come with some additional rainfall.

Monday, meanwhile, is expected to be much drier, with rainfall forecast to taper off before returning again on New Year’s Eve. The evening hours on Tuesday are expected to be mostly mild, but the heavy precipitation in the forecast will likely leave the city “soaked” in the hours before 2025, according to AccuWeather.

The typical high for New Year’s Eve in the Central Park area is just under 41 degrees, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s most recent analysis. But this year, highs are forecast for the low 50s, per AccuWeather.

Forecasters further warned the wet conditions slated for the coming days could cause traffic for travelers headed to any holiday hotspots.

Earlier this week, the city celebrated a white Christmas after days of frigid weather. On Sunday, temperatures dipped into the teens, warming only slightly in the lead-up to Christmas. Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, snow washed over the city and blanketed Central Park with an inch of snow.

It marked the first white Christmas in New York since 2009, when 2 inches of snow was recorded.
