VIRGINIA (DC News Now) — Democrat Eugene Vindman was officially declared the winner, taking Virginia’s 7th Congressional District seat, according to the Associated Press.
He faced off against Republican Derrick Anderson to replace Democrat Abigail Spanberger, who announced in 2023 that she would give up the seat to run for governor of Virginia in 2025. Spanberger has represented the district since 2018.
Vindman served under presidents of both parties as an Infantry officer in the 82nd Airborne, a military prosecutor and an advisor at the White House National Security Council, according to his campaign site.
His campaign focused on several issues, including protecting abortion rights and IVF, investing in local transportation infrastructure, advocating for the military community and stopping Project 2025.
