Dashcam video captured a motorcyclist being struck by a hit-and-run driver in San Bernardino County.
On Tuesday, the witness who recorded the crash was driving on the 15 Freeway in Rancho Cucamonga during the busy morning commute.
A black Subaru sedan ahead of him suddenly merged into another lane and struck a nearby motorcyclist, sending the biker tumbling onto the road.
Video captured the biker standing up after the collision. The suspect didn’t stop and continued driving away.
“The [motorcyclist] flipped and his head literally hit the floor,” the witness, who did not wish to be identified, told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson.
After the impact, the witness said he thought the suspect would pull over but when he watched the vehicle headed towards an off-ramp, that’s when he realized a hit-and-run was happening and he had no intention of letting that driver get away.
He made a quick decision to follow the suspect and recorded his license plate information before calling 911.
The witness said he was determined to catch the suspect because the incident hit close to home — he had also been injured in a hit-and-run crash just months earlier and was still recovering.
“I recently had back surgery because of that, so it affected my life in a very bad way,” he said. “I didn’t want that to happen to somebody else.”
A spokesperson with California Highway Patrol’s Rancho Cucamonga Office confirmed an officer located the suspect driver within an hour of the report and collected a statement from them.
CHP said the driver wasn’t immediately arrested, but authorities are determining whether they’ll recommend felony hit-and-run charges to the district attorney.
KTLA spoke with the injured motorcyclist who said he was left bruised and injured and suffered a tear in his hip area.
The witness told KTLA he wants justice and hopes appropriate consequences are given to the hit-and-run driver.
The case remains under investigation by CHP. Footage of the incident can be seen in the video player above.
