Calumet City police said two 16-year-olds have been charged with first-degree murder in the Sept. 26 shooting death of a Hammond man who was helping his sister deliver food.
Also, police in Richton Park said they continue to investigate the shooting death of a 40-year-old man who was inside his home in the 22100 block of Main Street when shots were fired from outside Oct. 2.
In Calumet City, Steven Cotner Jr., 23, of the 6700 block of California Avenue in Hammond, suffered a gunshot wound to the back the evening of Sept. 26 in the 400 block of Merrill Avenue.
He was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m. that night at UChicago Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Police said in a news release two 16-year-olds had been charged in the shooting death and were being held at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago.
No additional information was available and police did not respond to a message Friday.
Cotner was described in his obituary as a brother who “was always willing to help any of his sisters when they needed help moving, mowing the lawn or even shoveling.”
The obituary said that anyone who knew Cotner “knows how big and beautiful of a smile he had.”
Richton Park investigators and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force continue to investigate the Oct. 2 shooting death of Floyd Elmore, who was inside his home in the 22100 block of Main Street.
Another person inside the home, who was not hurt, called 911, and police responded at 9:41 p.m., according to Jerel Jones, deputy police chief.
“We are continuing to follow up on persons of interest,” Jones said Thursday.
He declined to say how many shots were fired and if there were multiple shooters. Jones said the shots were fired from on the home’s property.
Elmore was pronounced at 10:43 p.m. Oct. 2 at Franciscan Health Hospital in Olympia Fields, according to the medical examiner’s office, which said he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.
