PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Prince George’s County officials said that two students died amid rising flu cases in the county and across the nation.
“Our school communities are feeling the impact of a nationwide rise in flu cases, with increasing numbers across the county and outbreaks in several of our schools. Tragically, we have lost two students. Our hearts are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time,” a letter from Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Superintendent Millard House II said, in part.
In his letter, House said that families should keep sick children at home — lu-like symptoms include fever, chills, cough and body aches. He also recommended that families consider getting their children vaccinated.
“The health and safety of our students, staff and families remain our highest priority, and we need your help,” House’s letter said.
The letter said that PGCPS has “taken immediate proactive measures to slow the spread,” including more cleaning and disinfection, increased handwashing and hygiene practices, on-site vaccinations for affected schools, limited exposure, adjustments to extracurriculars and ongoing monitoring.
PGCPS said that it may also require temporary masking if flu cases reach “critical levels” in any school.
As of March 1, 2025, the Maryland Department of Health reported over 6,700 hospitalizations for the flu statewide so far this year.
