CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — An important date for the 2024 General Election is coming up this Tuesday because Oct. 15 is the very last day West Virginians can register to be eligible to vote on Nov. 5.
One of the goals of the last-minute registration push is to get more people to cast ballots in early voting and on Election Day.
Voters can register to vote or make changes, such as their name and address, at county clerk’s offices in West Virginia, all of which will be open until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. People can also register to vote or make changes online until midnight Tuesday night by going to GoVoteWV.com.
People can vote early beginning Wednesday, Oct. 23, but they must get registered to vote soon.
“Well, a higher voter turnout always leads to higher confidence in the outcome of an election. In West Virginia, we’re still working with removing names of people who’ve moved out of state, may have maybe died, or have duplicate registrations,” said Mike Queen, deputy chief of staff at the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office.
Voters in West Virginia can still request and receive an absentee ballot, but they must be postmarked on or before Election Day to be counted.
Ohio and Kentucky are also still accepting absentee ballot applications, but voter registration in both the Buckeye and Bluegrass states already ended on Oct. 7.
