President-elect Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has received assurances from Mexico’s new president that she will “stop migration” though her country and into the US.
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” he added.
Trump, 78, noted that he and Sheinbaum Pardo also discussed illegal drugs coming into the US from south of the border during their “very productive conversation.”
“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs,” he wrote.
“It was a very productive conversation!”
Sheinbaum Pardo, a 62-year-old scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, became Mexico’s first female president when she was inaugurated in October.
In a social media post, she confirmed that she informed Trump that migrant caravans racing to the US border “are being taken care of.”
“I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump,” Sheinbaum Pardo wrote on X. “We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico.
