(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump met with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for nearly two hours in the Oval Office on Monday, according to a source familiar with the meeting.
The meeting comes as immigration efforts are under increasing scrutiny following a second fatal shooting in Minneapolis.
After 37-year-old motorist Renee Macklin Good was fatally shot by a federal officer, Noem and others at DHS made early statements saying she was trying to run over agents with her car. They said the agents acted in self-defense, at times referring to her as a domestic terrorist.
DHS surged additional immigration officers to Minneapolis in response to protests that erupted following Macklin Good’s death.
There have been an increasing number of conflicts between protesters and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and some federal agents have deployed chemical agents at close range and used flash bang grenades.
On Saturday, 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti was fatally shot during an interaction with immigration officers. Pretti had a legal firearm, and initial statements from the Trump administration suggested he was reaching for the weapon, something videos and witness statements appeared to dispute.
While DHS said there is bodycam footage of the shooting, the Trump administration has not committed to releasing it.
ICE has also come under criticism for tactics used during immigration actions, including going door-to-door in neighborhoods, breaking down doors to homes, breaking windows to pull people out of their cars, detaining U.S. citizens and detaining children as young as 5.
Democrats have been vocal critics of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, but following Pretti’s shooting, some Republicans have also raised concerns over the training given to ICE officers.
In the wake of Pretti’s death, Trump sent border czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis and reassigned Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino. After a phone call between the president and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, there are also reports that Trump will be reducing the number of agents in the state.
